Ride Rules & Etiquette

Group Riding Basics

Every Clapham Chasers member is expected to understand and follow group riding etiquette. Riding well in a group keeps everyone safe, efficient, and predictable.

  • Ride smoothly, consistently, and within the group
  • Hold your line – no sudden movements
  • Stay alert to road conditions and rider signals
  • This is a group ride, not a race

Safety First

Riding close together requires discipline. Focus on three things:

  • Formation – Stay in position and move predictably
  • Communication – Call and signal hazards clearly
  • Awareness – Always look ahead and anticipate

Formation

Standard

  • Ride max 2 abreast, ideally in groups of up to 8
  • Keep tight formation (similar road space to a car)
  • Share the workload – rotate at the front

Single File

  • Called when roads are narrow or traffic requires
  • Any rider can call it – everyone must follow
  • Do not fight for position or overlap wheels

Climbs & Descents

  • Group may split naturally
  • Regroup at the top or after descents

Communication

Clear communication is essential. Call it and pass it on.

Key Calls

    • “Car up / back” – traffic approaching
    • “Slowing / stopping” – reduce speed
    • “Hole left / right” – hazards
    • “Single file” – change formation
    • “Clear” – junction is clear (always check yourself)

    Key Signals

      • Hand up = stopping
      • Palm down = slowing
      • Point = hazard
      • Arm out = turning
      • Behind back = moving out

    Core Ride Etiquette

    DO

    • Follow the Highway Code and wear a helmet
    • Keep roughly a 1ft gap to the rider in front
    • Ride directly behind the wheel ahead
    • Brake and accelerate smoothly
    • Keep pedalling when on the front
    • Repeat all calls and signals
    • Check over your shoulder before moving out
    • Bring essentials (tools, spares, food, phone)
    • Communicate if you’re struggling

    DON’T

    • Overlap wheels
    • Use aero bars in a group (no TT bikes)
    • Make sudden movements
    • Surge or ride off the front
    • Half-wheel or push riders out
    • Rely solely on others at junctions
    • Zone out – stay alert
